There are three options for 3DS authentication:
NO_PREFERENCE: Process a payment while leaving it up to the buyer’s bank to decide whether or not to apply 3DS authentication.
- The buyer’s bank may choose not to apply authentication to a transaction. In this case, it is also liable for any fraud or unpaid charges.
- This is Scellius’s default setting if no other option is selected.
- It allows for transactions without authentication and without risk to the merchant.
FRICTIONLESS: Process a payment by requesting that the buyer’s bank not apply 3DS authentication.
- The request to waive authentication is made by the merchant. The merchant is therefore liable in the event of fraud or non-payment.
- It is important to carefully weigh the risk against the benefit. In fact, waiving 3DS authentication increases the transaction success rate, but also increases the risk.
- The buyer’s bank may refuse this request and require 3DS authentication.
- There are strict rules regarding the use ofFRICTIONLESS. Transactions under €30 are eligible; above that amount, the transaction defaults toNO_PREFERENCE.
CHALLENGE: Process a payment by requesting 3DS authentication from the buyer’s bank.
- Authentication is systematically applied by the buyer’s bank.
Scellius offers 2 methods for choosing the authentication type:
- From our risk management tool.
- Directly within the payment request (requires development knowledge to add additional data during a payment).
